Photographing births has got to be one of the best jobs ever. I'm so grateful to have been invited to document the arrival of this little girl at St Paul’s hospital in Vancouver.
In this visual birth story you’ll see outstanding partner support, the use of a variety of positions for comfort during birth, attentive midwifery care and the use of birth affirmation cards. There are many ways to move through the birth process and each has so much beauty and strength in it.
This was my first chance getting to work alongside registered midwife Marie-Laure from Sage-Femmes Her care was absolutely exceptional - competent, warm and calming. She is deeply invested in the work she does and that shows in the birth space – and in the photos I was able to make of her. I look forward to working with her again.
At the end, after their baby had arrived, and all the checks and after-care was done, their peaceful contentment was so beautiful. A sigh of relief. The time of waiting and working was done and the time of welcome had begun. I just love the moments of them soaking in their new daughter.
When the families I work with have a positive experience with my support and decide to share a bit of that experience with others I’m so glad. Here are some words from the mother:
“Aimee has a beautiful calm spirit. At my daughter's birth, she was experienced, competent and supportive in all the ways I needed. Prior to, she provided me with resources that were relevant to my situation, as I asked, and didn't flood me with unsolicited advice. At the birth, she had the capacity to be present but not overpowering. Aimee also brings with her a real understanding of the sacredness of the moment of birth. Her birth photography is a testament to this.”
